Broadcast Meteorologist

About Me
Weather has always fascinated me. I remember as a kid being woken up at night by my dad so we could watch thunderstorms roll in together. Whenever there was a show or movie on about weather I was watching it. My goodness I probably knew every word in the movie Twister. But, becoming a Meteorologist never crossed my mind. It was an elective class in college that reconnected me to the world of weather and the idea of making it my career.
During my senior year at Indiana University I landed an internship at the leading station in Indianapolis, IN, WTHR. Having never stepped foot in front of a green screen, or in a newsroom for that matter, I was so intimidated and nervous that for the first month I whispered the weather to myself while at the chromakey. Before too long one of my mentors said, 'Katy, you realize that one of these days you'll have to start talking out load, right?' It didn't take long after that for me to muster up the courage to start talking, for i had to if a job in the world of broadcasting was going to come to fruition.
After my internship I was off to South Carolina where I tracked heat & hurricanes as the weekend meteorologist. I returned to the Midwest a year later, spending 4 years in Illinois and the last 2 in Wisconsin.
My decision to become a broadcast meteorologist was worth the hard work and dedication. The saying goes, find what you love and make a career out of it, you'll never be bored a day in your life. The challenge of being a meteorologist, the difficulty and exhaustion, are outweighed by the excitement, fun and variability of weather forecasting. There's no monotony, there's nothing routine about the weather, creativity is allowed to flourish and that is what keeps me passionate and driven and ultimately love what I do.
